Dead Chest Island or Deadman's Chest Island is a small rocky outcrop in between Peter Island and Salt Island. There is only sparse vegetation and there is hardly any fresh water. It is said that the British pirate Edward Teach (Blackbeard) dropped 15 of his men on the island and a bottle of rum after he was displeased. The famous sailor song '15 men on a dead man's chest, yo ho ho and a bottle of rum' is said to have originated here. When the rum was finished they drowned trying to reach Deadman's Bay on Peter Island. There is some spectacular diving and snorkeling to be found around the island.
